Type the Sky is a project by German Lisa Rienermann that mixes urban architecture, photography and typography.
Back in 2005, she spent a semester in Barcelona, Spain. Standing in a small courtyard there she looked up and saw buildings, the sky, clouds and noticed that the negative space between the houses formed the letter Q.
Amazed by the idea of the sky as a typographic possibility, Rienermann ran through the city looking up, trying to find the missing letters to complete the whole alphabet – which she successfully did. In 2007 the project was awarded a certificate of typographic excellence by the Type Directors Club New York.
