Junko Mizuno is the reigning queen of Japanese creepy cute with her cavalcade of grotesque yet delightful characters. She has over 25 books released, won the Japan expo awards in France in 2007, has exhibited in shows internationally, and constantly works on comics, illustrations, paintings, and designs for clothing and toys.
Mizuno’s rainbow-colored sugar hit of uber-kawaii, is like an acid trip taken in the Japanese 60s. Dense with foxy pin up girls in soft-core porn scenarios, creatures from Japanese folklore, and Western mythology, sea life, animals and food, her pastel pieces are almost sickeningly fun, fantastic, and funky.
Her work has garnered a cult following, particularly outside of her native Japan, and she is one of the most internationally recognized Japanese artists. We met her after she just moved to SF for an interview,- in person, Mizuno is like one of her characters come to life, simply adorable.
