Black Hole is a twelve-issue comic book series written and illustrated by Charles Burns, published between 1995 and 2005. Set during the mid-1970s, the plot is about a group of teenagers that contract a mysterious sexually transmitted disease known as The Bug, which causes them to develop grotesque unique physical mutations.
The bizarre story inspired an even more bizarre photographic series, which is the result of a partnership between photographer Max Oppenheim and prosthetic artist Bill Turpin. The prostheses were specially made for each model, and the wardrobe, illumination and style were carefully thought to keep maximum fidelity to the comics.
